L.P: Reflecting the Genre

REFLECTS THE GENRE

The sub-genre of our horror film is psychological/supernatural because there is less shots of the antagonist as it’s more inside the mind of the antagonist controlling their thoughts and actions. Also, the antagonist is a ghost. It starts off slowly by the girl finding a music box with a crane inside but develops into a whole new aspect where the girl is completely taken over by these paper cranes and ends up killing herself. It’s hard to completely understand, and like the film ‘Donnie Darko’ for example the audience have to create their own judgement of the reasons behind the actions taken throughout the film. 

The name in itself implies a sense of mystery and can allow the audience to understand that the main character will at some point become ‘possessed’ by something. We have used our own style to reflect the genre, by having a psychological element of the girl not being able to stop making paper cranes. This also gives a sense of the supernatural as the Japanese use to make paper cranes to trap the spirits inside. We are using a music box as a prop which takes control of the people that open it and listen to the music play, the music starts to be repeated in their dreams, and in their heads controlling them and manipulating their thoughts and feelings.

Group: Sunday 19th January shoot evaluation

We went to the location to start our first shoot, we are filming at Alex's Aunts house because it has a garage with a perfect space for our main storyline to occur in. Alex, Danielle and Laurel met at the house with Hannah Rayner who is playing the part of Hannah in our horror opening. The shoot was very successful and we managed to complete a page and a half of storyboard, which was 16 shots. Alex's main role was camera work and Danielle and Laurel were in charge of continuity checking, lighting and directing.

The most creative shot we took was a birds eye view of Hannah walking down the stairs towards the front door, the vivid shadows in that shot connote the dark side of Hannah. However, we couldn't do our establishing shot because the roof of the house is at the moment being fixed and therefore it would have ruined our piece, nevertheless everything else went according to plan. Our storyboard was very important when filming because it allowed us to see which shots we had to do and the order of the shots, we would have really struggled if we didn't use it as it gave structure and organisation whilst shooting.

 Today, (Monday 20th January) we are going to go to the location to clear out the garage and to hang up the cranes ready to shoot again on Friday 24th January and Sunday 16th January. When shooting on these two dates we are going to keep following the storyboard to finish our filming.

Group:Thursday 17th January

Today we went to our location and started to sort out the set as much as possible in preperation for shooting to begin on Sunday. We cleared some of the bedroom so that on Sunday there are only a few things we have to do to have the room how we want.

Also we did some very quick test shots for our opening. Just to ensure we know we can achieve the shots we want in preperation for sunday:

Sunday 19th Jan	We are starting to film our sequence. We will be meeting at 17:00 and we will start filming when it gets completely dark. We will finish filming the first part our sequence where Hannah walks from her bedroom to the garage.
Monday 20th Jan	Afterschool we will go straight from school to our location so we can make sure to set up and clear the garage.

Feedback:
-Clear ideas for concept
-Well thought out planning of shots
-Clear focus of continuity and how we will achieve it and overcome issues
-Expanse knowledge of real life. For example the fact that the cranes link to the Japanese superstitions.
-Time consuming when making the paper crane props.
-The idea of 3D text didn't fit with our piece and genre so we are using alternative idea.
-Use of the stop motion text idea sounds promising.
